Stink Bug Control in Wilmington, NC
Local Pest Control Since 1941, Ready Before Fall Season Peaks
Stink bugs are a familiar fall nuisance across the Wilmington area, and they can get worse before they get better. As temperatures drop each September and October, brown marmorated stink bugs cluster on exterior walls and push through gaps in soffits, window frames, and vents, looking for a warm place to spend the winter. Jay Taylor Exterminating has been protecting New Hanover County homes from pests like these since 1941, with four generations of the Taylor family behind every service call. Jay Taylor IV and Stephen Taylor operate the company today, carrying forward the same local focus their great-grandfather built.
Stink bugs don’t bite or spread disease, but an untreated home can end up hosting dozens of them through winter and into spring. The right time to act is before they’re inside your walls. We offer stink bug control in Wilmington and throughout the surrounding coastal counties, including Brunswick County and beyond.

When Stink Bugs Enter Wilmington Homes
Brown marmorated stink bugs are an invasive species originally from Asia, first confirmed in North Carolina in 2009. They’re now present across the state, including the coastal plain. While activity here tends to be less intense than in the piedmont and mountains, stink bugs are a recognized seasonal nuisance in the Wilmington area, with the primary entry window running from late September through October.
During that window, adults seek overwintering sites. They cluster on sun-warmed exterior walls, then work their way inside through any gap they can find: attic soffits, roofline seams, utility penetrations, crawlspace vents, and the edges of window and door frames. Once inside, they enter diapause, a hibernation-like state, and go quiet in attics, wall voids, and crawlspaces. On warm winter days or when spring arrives, they wake up and move toward light, often appearing inside living areas when homeowners aren’t expecting them.
Wilmington’s milder fall temperatures mean stink bugs stay active longer before settling in, which extends the period when exterior treatment does the most good. Acting before late September can improve your chances of addressing the issue before peak activity. Once bugs are inside your walls, effective control becomes significantly harder.
Identifying Stink Bugs & Spotting a Problem Early
Brown marmorated stink bugs are shield-shaped, roughly 5/8 of an inch long (about the size of a dime), with a brown marbled pattern and alternating light and dark banding along the abdomen edge. They’re easy to distinguish from most other fall invaders once you know the shape.
Common indoor hiding spots include attics, wall voids, behind curtains, and near windows and doors. The biggest mistake homeowners make is crushing or vacuuming live bugs. The glands on their thorax release a foul defensive odor when threatened, and vacuuming live stink bugs coats the machine’s interior with that chemical, so the smell can return each time the vacuum runs. In large numbers, stink bugs can also clog heat pumps and other equipment.
A cluster of bugs on your exterior wall in September isn’t just an outdoor problem. It’s a warning that entry into your home may already be underway or about to start.
How We Treat Stink Bugs in Wilmington
Professional stink bug control works by intercepting bugs at the perimeter before they get inside. Our quarterly pest protection plan includes exterior barrier treatments timed to seasonal pest activity, so the late-summer to early-fall entry window is covered as part of your ongoing service. We also treat identified entry points around soffits, rooflines, utility penetrations, and vents that give stink bugs and other overwintering pests a route indoors.
The initial service visit covers both interior and exterior. If stink bugs or any other covered pest return between quarterly visits, we come back and re-treat at no additional charge. Year-round coverage means your home isn’t just protected during stink bug season; it stays addressed through the full seasonal pest cycle that coastal plain conditions bring.
