Boxelder Bug Control in Wilmington
Seasonal Boxelder Bug Control Backed by Four Generations
Boxelder bugs gathering on exterior walls or appearing indoors call for a close look at how they’re reaching the structure. Jay Taylor Exterminating evaluates seasonal insect activity around Wilmington homes, focusing on exterior openings and the conditions that allow bugs to move inside.
Founded by J.W. Taylor, Sr. in 1941, we’ve served Southeastern North Carolina for more than 80 years. The fourth generation of the Taylor family now operates our company, continuing residential pest service in Wilmington, Brunswick County, and Ocean Isle Beach.

What to Expect from a Boxelder Bug Evaluation
Our state-certified technicians examine the property rather than treating visible insects alone. A free evaluation can include the crawl space, foundation, and perimeter, where gaps and protected harborages may contribute to an infestation. We explain what we find and outline practical treatment considerations in plain language.
We use Integrated Pest Management, a property-focused approach that addresses pest harborages and exterior access points while minimizing chemical exposure around children and pets. For boxelder bugs, the inspection may reveal where insects are congregating and where exclusion work could reduce indoor activity. We discuss the available options after evaluating the home and considering the timing of the infestation.
Initial Residential Pest Service
Our general residential pest process begins with an inspection, followed by interior and exterior treatment. Application decisions reflect the insects and conditions identified during the inspection. Our technicians arrive in marked company vehicles and explain the proposed steps before work begins.
Quarterly Exterior Service
We also provide quarterly exterior pest service focused on vulnerable areas around the structure. These visits are part of our broader residential pest practices, but boxelder bug coverage under a recurring plan depends on the service selected. We clarify the applicable scope when providing an estimate.

How to Identify Boxelder Bugs Around Your Wilmington Home
Adult boxelder bugs are approximately one-half inch long, with brownish-black bodies and three red stripes on the thorax, directly behind the head. Young boxelder bugs, called nymphs, are wingless and bright red.
The scientific name for the boxelder bug is Boisea trivittata. These insects commonly become noticeable from fall through early spring as they search for protected places to overwinter. Large groups may gather in cracks and crevices, especially along south-facing walls and west-facing walls warmed by the sun.
What Boxelder Bugs Do Indoors
Boxelder bugs don’t bite or sting, reproduce indoors, or damage a home’s structure. Their numbers can still make them a significant nuisance. They may stain fabrics and other surfaces with their waste, while crushing them can release an unpleasant odor.
Indoor sightings during winter often involve insects that entered earlier and remained hidden inside wall voids or other sheltered areas. Warm indoor temperatures or sunny winter days can make them active again. Removing visible bugs doesn’t address the exterior gaps they used to enter.
Why Boxelder Bugs Gather on Certain Properties
Boxelder bugs feed and breed near seed-bearing female boxelder trees. They may also use maple trees and ash trees as hosts. Properties with these trees nearby can experience larger seasonal populations, although removing a tree may not be practical or sufficient by itself.
Managing seeds, fallen plant material, and volunteer seedlings around host trees may reduce favorable conditions. Homeowners should also inspect the building exterior before cooler weather drives insects toward protected openings. The most useful response combines landscape maintenance with structural exclusion.
Preventing Boxelder Bugs from Entering the Home
Mechanical exclusion means physically closing the openings pests use to enter, and it’s the primary prevention method for boxelder bugs. Work should focus on gaps around windows, doors, siding, and utility pipes. Torn screens and loose-fitting door or window components should also be repaired.
Common boxelder bug entry points include:
- Cracks where siding, trim, or masonry materials meet
- Gaps around utility pipes and exterior penetrations
- Damaged window and door screens
- Openings around frames, thresholds, and weather seals
Broad insecticide spraying generally provides limited value against boxelder bugs. When large numbers congregate on a structure in fall, a professional exterior pyrethroid application may provide relief. Pyrethroids are insecticides modeled after naturally occurring compounds in chrysanthemum flowers, but they should be considered alongside exclusion work and the conditions at the property.
A property evaluation can distinguish an exterior swarm from insects that have already moved into structural gaps. It also allows our technician to identify accessible openings and explain which next steps fit the home.
